Year 7 Transition

The transition from primary to secondary school is significant and we understand that students can experience new challenges at this time. We want your daughter to quickly feel at home and to embrace all the wonderful and varied opportunities on offer.

In order to support your daughter through transition and to manage any of these challenges successfully, our Transition Program aims to build confidence and resilience in your daughter as she begins to develop positive relationships with key staff members and her new friends.

Sion First Music Program

Following acceptance of enrolment in Year 5, Year 6 students are invited to join the Sion First Music Program.

Based on our highly successful Year 7 Instrumental Music Program, the Sion First Music Program provides after-school music tuition and ensemble participation with our expert music staff.

Not only does this program deliver a proven music curriculum, it provides an added layer to our transition program for Year 6 students, allowing them to become familiar with the College grounds, staff and future peers, prior to starting at Sion.

Primary School Visits

Our Principal, Tina Apostolopoulos, visits students in the Catholic primary schools within our priority parishes. She meets with Year 6 students who will commence at the College in the following year and answers any questions or concerns they may have about starting secondary school.

Our Transition Team contacts every primary school prior to students commencing at the College. It is important to hear from primary school staff, who are a wonderful asset to the College in preparing students for secondary school. At the request of the primary school, the Transition Team will visit staff and students.

Sion One Program

Transition from primary school to secondary school can be a daunting process, even more so for students who are the only ones from their primary school attending the College. To ensure your daughter is supported through the transition process as smoothly and as confidently as possible, prior to the formal Orientation Day, we provide an additional morning for our Sion One students.

We recognise that Year 7 transition can be difficult for families too, therefore parents/guardians of Sion One students are also invited to a Parent Transition Workshop as part of the Sion One morning.

Big Sister, Little Sister Program

When arriving at Our Lady of Sion College on Orientation Day, Year 7 students are partnered with a ‘big sister’ in Year 10. Throughout the first year, students meet with their big sisters every week in Term 1 and then regularly for the rest of the year, to ensure students have a friendly face in the school and an older student to ask for advice or suggestions.

The program is used to prepare for school activities, and reflect on year level needs, with a focus on developing relationships, problem solving, organisation and study, and management of homework and revision.
